Design Beyond Screens
A human-centred research project exploring sustainability and empowerment in traditional Indian crafts.
My Role:
Researcher & Design Facilitator
01

Context-
Phulkari, the traditional embroidery of Punjab and Haryana, holds Geographical Indication (GI) status with global relevance.
Yet, the women who sustain it often lack access to design literacy, digital tools, and structured markets. This field project explored how design thinking could translate cultural craftsmanship into sustainable livelihoods.
03

Key barriers identified-
Low exposure to structured design processes or product storytelling.
Limited awareness of pricing, market trends, and production scaling.
Fragmented community networks and inconsistent quality control.
05

Why it matter-
This project bridges research and social design, proving that design frameworks can:
Empower communities with low design literacy.
Translate qualitative insight into tangible livelihood outcomes.
Use humanity-centred design to drive sustainability and inclusion.
Design as a catalyst — connecting culture, sustainability, and empowerment through evidence-based frameworks.
Impact in one line

Conducted with -
NIFT & Jan Kalyan Samiti (NABARD-supported NGO)

02

The core challenge-
How might we empower women artisans in Karnal to evolve their inherited Phulkari craft into self-sustaining design enterprises?
04

Research frameworks applied-
Ethnographic Research: On-ground field visits, shadowing, contextual interviews
Empathy Mapping: Capturing emotional and behavioural insights
Worked with Jan Kalyan Samiti, a women-led NGO partnered with NABARD, to facilitate access, translate insights, and co-develop prototypes with artisans who have limited socio-economic literacy.

I’m a Product Designer who builds clarity from complexity, shaped by years working across different design domains.
My journey began with crafting leather goods and later evolved into social design, where I explored how design shapes human behaviour and collective experience. Over the years, I’ve worked across fintech, real estate, consulting, and entertainment industries. From crafting leather to designing SaaS, one thing that has remained constant is my curiosity. It fuels my creativity and keeps me grounded in a "user-first" mindset.
With a master’s degree in Experience Design from NIFT, I bring structure to complexity, turning insights into experiences that create real-world impact. I believe good design systems should make decision-making lighter, not louder. Beyond the hustle of navigating through Figma, I find happiness through photography, sketching, painting, and exploring cuisines.
John Maeda once said, “Design is a conversation between two people.” I’d be glad if this one sparked ours.
